Leading sire Malibu Moon has had plenty to be thankful for heading into the holiday season of yet another tremendous year. Fittingly, Thanksgiving weekend provided him with some big wins to add to his 2009 success.
Sara Louise, a 3-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon who is best known as the last horse to defeat Rachel Alexandra, captured the $150,000 Top Flight H. (G2) on Nov. 27th at Aqueduct a day before Bon Jovi Girl ran third in the Gazelle (G1). Also on the west coast, Pinkarella – another top 3-year-old filly by Malibu Moon – made a triumphant return to the races by romping to a five-length score in an allowance race at Hollywood Park.
Sara Louise picked up her biggest win of the year in the Top Flight, outfinishing multiple graded stakes winner Justwhistledixie in the stretch of the one-turn, one-mile event at Aqueduct. Earlier this year she won the Victory Ride S. (G3) at Saratoga and now owns a record of four wins from eight starts with earnings of $380,935 for Godolphin Racing. She also won the Pocahontas S. (G3) last year at two over Rachel Alexandra, and was also recently a narrow runner-up to champion Indian Blessing in a graded stakes race at Belmont.
Bon Jovi Girl, a three-time stakes winner of $512,443, was a valiant third in the Gazelle, giving Malibu Moon another Grade 1 performer. She earned a 103 Beyer earlier this summer defeating Payton d'Oro by eight lengths in the Susan's Girl S.
Pinkarella showed tremendous promise at two and early at three before going to the sidelines. After an eight-month break, the bay filly returned to an emphatic win for trainer Doug O’Neill and owners Flintridge Stable and STD Racing Stable. She stopped the clock in 1:09.01 for six furlongs over the local synthetic surface while winning well in hand.
