Temple City moved into the top five on the 2014 Freshman Sire list when Saratoga Heater galloped to a four-length victory in Sunday’s $150,000 Bertram F. Bongard S. at Belmont Park.
Temple City now has three stakes horses, including Grade 2 winner Startup Nation, and $452,000 in progeny earnings, both top five numbers for all first-year sires.
Saratoga Heater, who broke his maiden the final race of the Saratoga meet with a come-from-behind win, went right to the front in the seven-furlong Bongard. Up two lengths after a quarter-mile in :22.28, the bay colt held that margin until midstretch, when he pulled away late to win by four in 1:24.63 over a muddy surface.
Saratoga Heater has now won two of his three starts, all of which have come on off tracks. Bred in New York by Machmer Hall, the colt was purchased for $100,000 at this year’s OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training.
