Z Big Apple a star in debut

The Malibu Moon colt Z Big Apple flashed his talent in his debut Oct. 20 at Santa Anita, winning like a seasoned veteran and earning the TDN “Rising Star” tag, given to juveniles that show promise early in their career (VIDEO).

Bottled up for the better part of the 5 1/2-furlongs, the 2-year-old firster had to wait for the right time to make his move, but once in the clear inside the final furlong, he cruised to the front and won by three parts of a length under a long hold. The final time was 1:04 flat.

Z Big Apple was a $250,000 OBS April 2-year-olds in training sale purchase, one of the top 12 prices paid at the Florida auction. The chestnut colt is out of the Storm Cat mare Stormy Monday, also the dam of Z Big Apple's full sister Pinkarella, winner of the Sugar Maple S.

Malibu Moon, currently seventh on the General Sire list, has had a great seven winners in the past few days, including the Municipalities Mayors H. winner Moonlit Malibu. His progeny earnings stand at $6,691,882.
